Portaal signs letter of intent for realization for Baunei

Portaal Signs Letter of Intent for Baunei at PROVADA

At the PROVADA real estate fair, housing corporation Portaal officially signed a letter of intent with the Cartesius development consortium (MRP and Ballast Nedam Development) for the realization of Baunei—a new residential development in Cartesius Utrecht featuring over 382 affordable rental homes across approximately 23,000 m². The signing took place in the presence of alderman Eelco Eerenberg, marking another milestone in the development of Cartesius as a forward-thinking, sustainable urban district.

The name Baunei is a tribute to Baunei, Sardinia, a region known as one of the world's Blue Zones, where people live longer, healthier, and happier lives. This philosophy is central to Cartesius Utrecht, shaping a neighborhood that prioritizes well-being, community, and sustainability.

Baunei will combine housing for regular home seekers with Portaal’s Mixed Living concept, where residents with and without residential counseling choose to live together in an organized setting. This approach supports tenants transitioning from social or sheltered housing, ensuring they integrate smoothly into their new living environment. At the same time, Mixed Housing fosters a sense of community, meeting the growing demand for neighborhoods where neighbors are engaged and connected.

Portaal is also exploring options for elderly housing within Baunei, addressing the increasing demand for senior-friendly homes while contributing to better circulation in the housing market. The development will feature an inner garden with a semi-public character, offering a balance between tranquility and community interaction while maintaining a strong connection to Cartesius Park.

Baunei represents a significant step forward in creating inclusive, future-proof housing solutions, reinforcing Cartesius as a model for healthy and sustainable urban living.
